Bacardi Cocktail

Thinking about it, I’ve posted an awful lot of 3 ingredient cocktails recently, haven’t I? 3 is obviously a powerful number even in mixology, and sometimes a simple recipe is better when there’s a particular flavour you’re trying to celebrate.

With the Bacardi Cocktail, I would say that flavour is ‘rum’. I mean, it’s in the name right, so what else would you think of when you hear the brand Bacardi? Saying that though, while the rum is undeniable in this cocktail, there is a second dominant flavour in the Bacardi Cocktail: Sweetness. Sweetness from the rum, sweetness from the fruit, and a curious sharp sweetness from the lime, despite all of its tartness. Unlike other ‘sweet’ cocktails however, there is a robustness of flavour that I attribute to the heavenly matchmaking of the rum and mint – a quintessential combination, as we’ve seen in other popular cocktails such as the Mojito. It’s fresh and tantalising to even the weariest of palates.

Although rum does have a natural sweetness to it, it is still a strong alcohol. Here, the fruitiness of the grenadine takes the razor edge away from what is, realistically, a heck of a lot of booze. I’m glad it’s only half an ounce of grenadine though; after all, the Bacardi Cocktail is a love letter to rum, so you wouldn’t want to diminish the very nature of the drink, would you?

It’s not a drink I would choose to have all the time, but I did enjoy it and I’m sure I will enjoy it again in the future.


The Recipe

♦  2 ounces Bacardi white rum

♦  1 ounce lime juice

♦  ½ ounce grenadine

Cocktail cherry

Shake all the ingredients together and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a cocktail cherry.
