With such an explosive name, the Kamikaze Cocktail would be an attractive prospect for many of us. However, the flavours don’t entirely match the name; though punchy with the alcohol (hello, 2 ounces of vodka?) it’s a surprisingly muted drink. Yes, there’s lemon sharpness – lord, don’t ask how – and heat from the booze, but overall it’s a level experience throughout.
Bizarrely enough, even though the cocktail features lime juice it actually tastes very close to a Lemon Drop, but only more balanced in terms of flavours. Like the Lemon Drop there is a heavy citrus note, but y’all should know by now that the Lemon Drop is unparalleled for its sourness. The Kamikaze isn’t as lip-puckering but it does a pretty damn good imitation. The big mystery here is how it tastes more of lemon than lime or, hell, orange from the triple sec. Seriously, how did that happen? That’s mixology magic, right there.
Even though there is a LOT of booze in this, it doesn’t actually taste as harsh as you might expect so don’t be afraid to try this one with lots of your friends. I imagine more of them will like it than you might expect.
Interestingly, I couldn’t help but notice a slight tingling in my lips as I drank the Kamikaze. I think my tagline for this cocktail would be ‘Pleasant Numbness’.
And it looks so classy too!
