Oh man, I could talk about this one for a long time.
It’s incredibly simple – just 3 ingredients, if you count the cocktail cherry – but it’s this simplicity that really enhances the entire experience. Despite every ingredient being cherry flavoured, this cocktail is far from one note; there’s a surprising number of levels to it, the brandy tempers the sweetness of the cherry liqueur and takes away the saccharine-do-y’all-want-diabetes edge that it normally has.
That’s not to say that there isn’t any sweetness, but it tastes more natural – and gentle – than you might have expected. I’ve always found that artificial sweetness can be cloying on the mouth, and especially the teeth. Let’s face it, it can really damper your drinking fun when you can feel a lacquer over the enamel.
Now, given that all the ingredients are cherry based in some way, I would say that it’s probably essential that you enjoy cherry, at least a little bit. That being said, if you’re on the fence – even just a little bit – about trying this one, I would say go for it – it’s fresh, fruity and has more than a little bit boozy. What more could you ask for!
♦ 1 ½ ounces cherry brandy
♦ 1 ½ ounces cherry liqueur
Shake the 2 liquid ingredients together and strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a cocktail cherry and enjoy!
