I’m sure that the words ‘Blue Monday’ resonate with a lot of people – after all, it can be hard to go back to work after the weekend, even if you love your job. Thankfully, this cocktail is a bit more palatable than your typical Monday morning alarm; a pleasant combination of gin and citric liqueurs, this charmingly bright cocktail is a safe bet if you fancy a drink that requires little effort and is not likely to vary each time you make it – although, as with all gin based drinks, the end result will absolutely hinge on what gin you use. Your standard London dry gin will be noticeably different to a spiced gin like Opihr for instance. Given the orange notes of the blue curaçao and triple sec, something uncomplicated like Gordon’s would be both complimentary and act as a pedestal for the complex flavors of the orange liqueurs. If you’re feeling daring, however, Zymurgorium do a marmalade gin which I imagine would be marvellous in this – bitter orange marmalade with bitter orange liqueurs sounds like a match made in heaven!
It’s not often we do a recipe with club soda in, and I’m not all that sure why. It’s a perfectly good mixer if you want a bit of carbonation without the alcoholic fizz of something like prosecco or champagne and it’s also surprisingly refreshing on the palate too as it breaks up the alcohol so that you can keep drinking it for longer. That’s a win in my book!
In short, the Blue Monday is tame but enjoyable and a good way to chill out after a busy start to your work week.
♦ 1 ounce gin
♦ 1 ounce triple sec
♦ Dash of blue curaçao
♦ 3 to 4 ounces chilled club soda
Shake the first 3 ingredients together and strain into a chilled lowball glass, then top with club soda.
