Drinking Game: Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness

It’s hard to explain why I love Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness as much as I do. As a game, it fails miserably on several key areas: the controls are clunky and unresponsive for the most part, the camera is HORRENDOUSLY fiddly, don’t even get me started on the graphics, the game suffers from so many bugs it’s unreal and the accents in the game are spotty at best. Even so, this is probably my favourite game in one of my favourite game series because the story is a-maz-ing; it’s gritty, supernatural and took risks that the rest of the series has been loath to take even to this day and so, despite its numerous shortcomings, it holds a special place in my heart as being an unappreciated masterpiece.

Yes, I know that declaration may earn me ridicule, but I stand by it.

Suffice it to say I was surprised to find out I was not alone; I found out a while ago that a good friend of mine (and fellow Tomb Raider aficionado) holds the same opinion of TRAoD – lovingly pronounced tray-odd among us fans – so we felt the time was right to recapture a bit of our childhood and put an adult spin on it in the form of a drinking game. Thus, we created the image below:

Listen, we spent TIME and EFFORT on this. I’m not joking either, we recreated the Angel of Darkness font to a tee in my humble opinion, made a new bullet point in the form of Lara’s iconic USP 45 Match, and laminated the damn thing.

This is the product of at least 3 hours solid Microsoft Word work – with a tiny bit of Photoshop thrown in because I’m lazy – so I hope it brings you as much joy as it did for me and my friend. When we played it later that week it was a hoot and a half; in this session we made it to the Louvre Storm Drains and took the total of 48 drinks and were unlucky enough to encounter one game breaking bug (just after I had made us a new cocktail, naturally) that forced not only the restart of the game, but the restart of the PS2.

Proof of love and lamination.

Just to clarify, the ‘Classy French dove’ is Janice in the Parisian Ghettos, and it’s not just the first time you meet her, but EVERY TIME YOU SEE HER. Yeah, have fun with that one! If I felt particularly generous I could also tell you where the game breaking bug is early in the game, but I’m not. Go forth and experience the ridiculousness of the drinking game for yourself.

This drinking game is a resounding success and I recommend that you play it immediately.
