The first thing that you notice about the Bay Breeze is the complete lack of aroma from the drink. With so much fruit juice in the recipe, you’d expect to be hit with a sweet, fruity fragrance as soon as you came within 30cm of the glass, but instead…nothing. It’s actually disconcerting and puts you on the back foot before you’ve even had a sip – and that’s just the start of the strangeness with this cocktail!
Even taste wise, this drink is a slow burner. When it first hits your taste buds, there’s very little flavour of note – instead it seems that the cranberry and pineapple juice have somehow cancelled each other out to leave nothing behind. There’s no building or layers of flavour, it’s just bland. It’s inoffensive and doesn’t have a nasty aftertaste but the problem here is that there is no taste at all, even the rum just adds heat instead of tropical booziness.
It’s a shame, because it looks like an inviting drink when put in front of you but there’s absolutely nothing that could persuade me to move it from the table to my lips.
I just don’t get it.
