Mexican Fizz

Tequila. Here we are again.

I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you my feelings on tequila – again – as they’re now so well documented that future generations will one day remember me in the annals of history as ‘She Who Is Bizarrely Opinionated About Tequila’. Suffice it to say, it is NOT my beverage of choice, and I would sooner rather drink the contents of a jar of pickles than have a tequila based drink.

Be that as it may, however, the Mexican Fizz is a remarkably pleasant cocktail and, bearing in mind my standing as a self-certified despiser of tequila, I can only imagine that if you – like the many hundreds of thousands that do so – enjoy the taste of tequila, then it would be downright gorgeous. There’s a sweetness from the cassis that is neither subtle nor overpowering, and yet somehow manages to temper down the ferocity of the tequila to a mere buzz. The champagne element then goes on to create a light freshness which elevates the drink as a whole to another level – one which is frankly unprecedented for me. I want you to understand and appreciate the full gravity of what i’m about to say. In the immortal words of Mr Bean; Brace yourself.

I would happily drink one of these on my own, with nothing left in the glass.

Take that for what you will, but i’ll have you know that is officially the highest praise I could possibly give a tequila cocktail.

The Recipe:

♦  1 ounce tequila

♦  1 ounce crème de cassis

♦  1 ounce champagne

Pour the tequila and crème de cassis into a chilled glass – ideally filled with ice – and then top slowly with champagne.
