This is the first tequila based drink that i’ve done since starting the blog for one simple reason: I do not like tequila. At all. I find the taste too strong and harsh, and it unfortunately does not sit well with me. I’m not sure what it is about it, but regardless of how much or little of it there is in a drink I can always tell it’s there, which means I tend to just ignore cocktails with it in entirely.
However, this isn’t exactly fair on those who do like tequila, like my fiancé, so at the weekend we made an agreement – we would make a cocktail each that we know the other person would not like, but we would both try all the cocktails. For my fiancé, the only ingredient that he truly despises is Pernod which I love, having been brought up on the majesty that is the Pernod and Black. In fact, it’s always guaranteed to be the contents of at least one of my hip flasks and yes, I have more than one hip flask.
The Cherry Picker is probably the nicest tequila based cocktail i’ve tried, which is saying something, but if you’re like me and can’t drink tequila even in the smallest of doses, you still won’t like this. On the first sip there’s an overpowering smell of tequila, which again I find off putting, but surprisingly there’s none of the usual harshness on taste. The cherry and apple have managed to mellow out the tequila leaving you with just the actual flavour of it, which is actually quite smokey, almost woody I would say. Overall the tasting notes are sweet, sharp and smokey, so if you like the sound of that I would definitely give it a go.
My fiancé has assured me that this is a top-notch tequila cocktail so on this occasion, i’m happy to defer to his rating.
♦ 1 ounce gold tequila
♦ 1 ounce cherry liqueur
♦ ½ ounce lime juice
♦ 1 ounce apple juice
Shake the ingredients together and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
