My fiancé hates mint. Absolutely despises it, to the point where we have to buy him sensitive toothpaste not because he needs it, but because it’s has the least amount of mint flavour and this way I don’t have to listen to him complain every morning and night about it.
This means that it’s a rare opportunity when I get to use the creme de menthe in a cocktail without him objecting and telling me to make something else. This weekend, however, was one of those occasions. As he was driving friends home after our all day Pathfinder session, he had to pick and choose the one drink he could have wisely, which meant that I was able to – perhaps sneakily – make a cocktail that I knew he wouldn’t want to waste it on.
Enter the Green Devil.
One look at that beast and you KNOW it’s going to be minty. Unfortunately as it was basically just mint and gin, mint was pretty much the only flavour you could taste which, looking back now, i’m not entirely sure why I didn’t expect it. Still, if you LOVE mint you’ll probably enjoy this but it is a bit domineering. I can’t help but think that mint works best when it’s working harmoniously with other flavours, rather than just on it’s own as the Green Devil is just a bit overwhelming.
If anything, it’s a striking cocktail and good for themed events like Halloween etc.
♦ 1 ½ ounce gin
♦ ¾ ounce creme de menthe
♦ ½ ounce fresh lime juice
Shake the ingredients together and strain into a chilled glass.
