Spiced Rum Coco Martini

Just by looking at the name, you can probably guess what the 2 ingredients are going to be. Go on, have a go. That’s right; spiced rum and chocolate, a combination that I was absolutely certain was going to be a winner. However, 2 ounces of spiced rum is going to be pretty darn overpowering for any drink, and this one is no exception. The ½ ounce of chocolate liqueur (we used dark creme de cacao) is just a background flavour; the rum is very much in charge here when really you want the glorious combination itself to be the star of the show. Unless you love rum, i’d probably think about giving this one a miss as it’s just too strong. I might even be inclined to say it’s too ‘harsh’.

Saying that, when we made the drink I initially lobbied to use our Thorntons Chocolate Liqueur, which is a much creamier and sweeter liqueur than creme de cacao. I suspect that if I re-made the drink with this it might turn out more palatable; i’m still convinced that chocolate and spiced rum are a match made in heaven so don’t be too surprised if I re-visit this one sometime in the future!

The Recipe:

♦  2 ounces spiced rum

♦  ½ ounce chocolate liqueur

Cocktail Cherry

Shake the 2 ingredients together and serve in a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a cocktail cherry for that little extra bit of sophistication, and a much needed treat at the bottom of the glass.
